Most people would also advise to drive out of towns and not inside, especially in Tehran. We should confirm that driving inside big cities is chaotic but not impossible.

Renting car would help a lot, you can rent a car for a few days at least to visit remote sites which are hard to get by public transportation. So if you are a fan of freedom in travel choices and if you have sufficient driving experience, renting car is highly recommended as petrol is very cheap, majority of roads are asphalted and well preserved, there are street signs in Farsi and English everywhere and also there would be light traffic outside cities (but not in holidays specially on the road to main tourist destination).

Important notes:

  •  Considering you may travel to remote places out of towns and there will be no internet access there, make sure to have offline maps.
  • When booking the car, mention a different drop off location if you want to do so as with some rental agencies it costs extra.
  • If you don’t drive within rush hours in big cities like Tehran and Shiraz, you may not encounter any problem regarding traffic.
  • Our recommendation is to hire a drive to drive you at least out of Tehran and then drive the rest of your trip yourself as you may be tired or not get used to the chaos of driving in Tehran at the beginning of your trip (though you may start your trip from other cities)
  • There are several tolls on the highways, have money in cash in the car.
  • There are speed bumps specially near villages and cities on highways and also in almost every main street in towns. Just be careful some of them are not marked.
